Mga Anino ng Kahapon, An Entry for Metro Manila Film Festival’s New Wave Section

Mga Anino ng Kahapon

Last night, Daddy A and I attended the gala night of Mga Anino ng Kahapon (Shadows of the Past), an advocacy film written and directed by Alvin Yapan. Starring in the film is Agot Isidro, TJ Trinidad, Carl Alexander Acosta, Carlo Cruz, Upeng Galang Fernandez, Ku Aquino and Jay Gonzaga.

Irene is a professional nurse who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The film covers her and her family’s story as they deal with the illness.

In the world of schizophrenia where imagination and reality are hard to define, Ed and Irene are about to discover the true meaning of love.

Daddy A and I found the movie touching because it showed a husband’s unconditional love for his wife with schizophrenia and their family’s support for them. We realized that we shouldn’t complain about the little stuff in our marriage when there are couples with much heavier burdens to worry about, such as an illness.

The goal of the film is to increase awareness about schizophrenia, which is “a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation.”

Through this film, Alvin Yapan and everyone involved in creating it hope to disprove the misconceptions about people with this condition and open the eyes of others so that help will be extended to those who are diagnosed with it. Because you see, support and mental health treatment facilities are currently not in the top priorities of our government. Moreover, mental conditions like schizophrenia are not covered by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth)! This is alarming because how, then, will low-income families afford the treatment of loved ones with schizophrenia?
