No Fail Grilled Tilapia Recipe for Sunday Barbecues

No Fail Grilled Tilapia Recipe

I don’t know about you, but I love anything grilled! This is why I always look forward to Sundays because that’s when Arjay takes out our ever trusty griller (gifted by one of our wedding godparents – thanks Ninong Mon!). Our grill favorites are Liempo and Pork Barbeque. Two Sundays ago, though, the hubby decided to try his hands on preparing and grilling stuffed Tilapia.

Grilled Tilapia Recipe: What You Will Need

  1. One (1) medium-sized Tilapia
  2. Two (2) red onions (or as much as you want to stuff)
  3. Three (3) Tomatoes (or as much as you want to stuff)
  4. Soy Sauce
  5. Vinegar
  6. Sugar
  7. Foil
  8. Griller

When you buy Tilapia, you can already ask whoever you bought it from to create a pocket for stuffing. Less work for you! 😀

Marinate and Stuff

Mix half a cup of soy sauce and half a cup of vinegar in a deep container. Add a spoonful of sugar (you can put less or more, it really depends on your taste) to the mixture then stir. Let the fish marinate in your sauce while you mince the red onions and tomatoes. Once done, add the minced onions and tomatoes to the container and mix everything up. Seal your container then place it inside the fridge. Arjay did this in the morning to make sure all the flavors will be absorbed by the Tilapia by the time it’s ready for grilling.

An hour before lunch time, take out the container with your Tilapia. Remember the pocket you created at the side of the fish? Stuff it with the onions and tomatoes from your marinade. Wrap the Tilapia in foil then prepare your grill.

Grillin’ time!

Arjay said that the secret to perfectly grilled Tilapia is the time you cook each side. His advice is to grill each side for 15 minutes – so that’s 30 minutes total grilling time. He’s very particular with the grilling time so he really sets an alarm so he’d know when to turn it over. In fairness naman, the Tilapia is fully cooked inside and is not burnt outside. It’s very tasty too! Pair it with steamed rice and salted egg and you’re good to go.

Looks so yummy! I hope I can convince my hubby to cook for me, too! This looks like a good/easy recipe to try.

I love the fact that Arjay is OC with time. I love grilled food too! Now I know what is the right grilling time! Thanks for the tips!

    1. Kim Reyes

He’s been experimenting with the best grilling time for weeks! Gano’n siya ka-OC, haha! Then he got to talk to a restaurant owner whose resto is known for grilled food. That’s when he learned the technique for grilling fish. I’m just not sure if the same applies to other meat. Baka kasi mas mahaba pag beef/pork.

  5. Nicole Cuerdo

My husband and I cooked this before and it was delicious. Same here, hubby does the grilling!

Wow sarap! I love tilapia eh. I think that’s the only fish that I can eat everyday. May mood kasi ako sa iba eh, ayoko ng matinik like bangus. Thanks for tip! Although I never tried grilling nor cooking, these steps from Daddy Arjay comes handy anytime. =)

  9. Reigne

Not really fond of cooking. So I am thankful that the hubby is a great cook. Else, we’d live on take outs and canned goods. This recipe I think would interest the hubby. I. Must. Show. Him.

  12. Lai Gamboa

i remember when i was pregnant with my youngest, I always request for grilled tilapia, it has been one of my fave. Also, my hubby likes to use banana leaves instead of foil.

ooooh, mukhang masarap! ma-try nga. but I’ll try the stuffing on squid too, would that work?

  16. Rina B. De Alban

A friend told me that fish like tilapia and bangus aren’t too healthy to eat because they’re raised in farms and eat feeds so I’ve been buying tilapia less often these days. Pero ang sarap nga niyang iihaw, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to eat once in a while, he he

    1. Kim Reyes

Yeah, I’ve read about that too. But I guess it’s okay to eat these once in a while.

  17. Rona Cuera-O

Tilapia one of my favorite things to eat :> matry nga yan na may stuffing minsan kasi ung mga natatry ko hindi pa completely luto o mali ung ingredients nila

    1. Kim Reyes

Basta the trick is 15 minutes per side para luto pero hindi sunog. 🙂 It’s yummy! Try the recipe!

  20. Looks good! But I don’t eat Tilapia. My mom tells me I am missing a lot but I just can’t. Same with Bangus. I think of them as pets hahaha weird!

    1. Kim Reyes
