5 Ways to Get Rid of Odors in the Home

5-ways-to-get-rid-of-odors-in-the-home

Are you a condo dweller as well? Are you familiar with that musty smell that welcomes you as soon as you open the door after a whole day of your unit being closed?

Since we’re usually out of the house on weekdays and when we do come home we immediately turn the airconditioner on, we don’t usually get a lot of fresh air to circulate in our unit. I occasionally slide open our balcony door to get some fresh air into our home, but with the warm weather, I have no choice but to use the airconditioner right away on most days.

But, being super OC around the house, I went on a mission to somehow get rid of the funky smell I get every time I go into our unit. I just can’t stop ranting about it so I decided to find a way to get rid of it. I searched the ever reliable world wide web for information and found some interesting methods of getting rid of odors in the home.

How do you get rid of odors in the home?

TIP #1: Clean up! If you don’t clean your home, then it’s just natural that odors will build up inside. With the unit being much smaller than our apartment before, we are able to clean it daily in just a few minutes. However, despite regularly cleaning it, we still get that musty smell every time we go into our unit after it being closed the whole day.

The culprit? Our trash bin. Since not a lot of fresh air circulate inside the unit, even small things like a half-full trash bin can cause lots of trouble. We make it a habit to throw the trash in the evening. But what do we do with the new bag of trash that’s not even half-full in the morning? I take it out in our balcony. That way, it won’t cause any odor build up while the unit is closed.

TIP #2: Let towels dry in the sun. Instead of just hanging towels to dry in the bathroom, we make time to take the towels out in our balcony where they are sun- and air-dried. That takes care of the damp smell we get in the bathroom.

TIP #3: Use fragrant spray. I’m sure you’re already familiar with Daiso. If you aren’t, oh my gosh you have to check it out! It’s one of my favorite go-to shops for my homemaking needs. With items starting at P88, who wouldn’t love shopping there, right?!

Anyway. Last night, Arjay and I went to Robinson’s Antipolo to see the second part of Mockingjay. Honestly speaking, I wasn’t impressed at all by the last installment. I expected so much from it after the build up since the first movie. Sadly, I felt like I was waiting for something exciting to happen throughout the movie, then it ended without any impact at all.

Back to what this post is really about… since we weren’t able to catch the 6:15 showing, we had no choice but to get the last full show, which is at 9. With 3 hours to spare, we took the time to look around for stuff we need for the condo. We eventually found ourselves in Daiso. I was originally looking for bento tools I can use since the Princess requested a Friday afternoon cooking session, but also found something to combat the musty smell in our condo.

What I got:

daiso_linen_and_room_spray

I love how relaxing this Daiso Linen and Room Spray in Lavender is! It reminds me of my childhood days when my mom would spray lavender oil on our pillows so we can sleep more soundly at night. I decided to do the same for the minis by spraying this on our linens and curtains. I have to say, it truly gives a relaxing scent!

TIP #4: Leave a bowl of vinegar in a corner of the room. Want to battle home odors naturally? Vinegar is a tried and proven ingredient that can get rid of nasty odors at home. Simply put a bowl of vinegar in a corner and leave it there until the odor is gone. It gives off a strong, vinegar-y smell at first, but that quickly evaporates so don’t worry about it. After using this method, I used the Lavender Spray above to add a scent to our home.

TIP #5: There’s nothing like fresh air! Really, though, there’s nothing like fresh air to help you get rid of nasty odors in your home. If possible, leave a small window open to let fresh air circulate in your home. If you don’t have a small window, just like us, you can leave the balcony door open for a couple of minutes before turning the airconditioner on.

We live in a small condo unit with windows and doors closed every day, so I’m not new to musty smell inside the house. I empty our trash bin every day. I think the wet towels are the real culprits. I let them dry inside the bathroom, instead of under the sun. I’ll heed your advice. Thanks!

Make sure you clean your sink too! Aside from the towels, the smell could be coming from there too. I’m so happy because our unit smells really fresh now!

I live in a condo and know what you mean. Love the list and as bad as it sounds I think I really need to do number 1. It’s so hard to thoroughly clean but it’s my goal before the year ends!

I recently found it that it makes a huge difference when you thoroughly clean the sink at the end of each day. Parang may smell din na nanggagaling doon eh. What I do is I spray the sink with white vinegar. I let it stay there as long as possible, then I wash it off. I know that made a difference because my husband noticed that the unit smells “clean.”
